Game Preview | v Chiefs Manawa
The last regular game of Super Rugby Aupiki for Matatū and it’s against reigning champs Chiefs Manawa. It’s time for a showdown.
The South Island women fly to Hamilton on Friday 10 March, ready for kick-off at 2.05pm on Saturday at FMG Stadium Waikato. Expect a nailbiter as one side will earn a spot in the Super Rugby Aupiki semi-finals.
Last time these teams squared off, in the first-ever Aupiki match, the Chiefs Manawa came away with the goods. Final score 17-15.
This time will feel a little different, with Matatū still hot off their inaugural win in Round 1, and a 1-point loss in Round 2 at home.
Adding to the intrigue will be the Bremner sisters. Previously both in Matatū colours, captain Alana’s sister Chelsea shifted to the Chiefs Manawa at the end of the 2022 season. Saturday will be their first time playing in opposite teams, having come up through the ranks of Canterbury’s rugby scene.
Keep an eye out for Amy Rule (Matatū prop) and Angel Mulu (Chiefs Manawa prop). Both players scored in defining moments the last time they met, so expect some form from them.
Tenika Willison, Chiefs Manawa winger and 2020 Olympic gold-medallist with the Black Ferns Sevens team, has been a standout in the Super Rugby Aupiki season. Expect some firepower from the 25 year old as she goes up against Matatū outside back Grace Steinmetz
With Black Ferns a plenty on both sides of the field, this is shaping up to be the game of the season. Our girls are fizzing and ready to take on the champs, and to prove themselves on the biggest stage.
The showdown for the semi-finals is here – don’t miss it!
