Team Named for First Home Game v Hurricanes Poua
Whitney Hansen and her coaching team have opted for consistency in their squad this week to face Hurricanes Poua on Sunday afternoon at Apollo Projects Stadium.
The squad of 23 remains unchanged from last week’s solid win over the Chiefs Manawa – with only one change in the starting line-up.
“We were really happy with how the squad performed last week, our experienced players led well and set the standard of how we wanted to play the game, and our debutants showcased what they were capable of,” Hansen says.
Marcelle Parkes will get her first start of the season at prop, supported by Georgia Ponsonby and Amy Rule to complete the front row.
Laura Bayfield and Chelsea Bremner will again line up in the second row, with captain Alana Bremner at blindside, Lucy Jenkins at openside, and Kaipo-Olsen Baker taking the number 8 jersey to complete the forward pack.
Following strong performances in round one, Maia Joseph and Hannah King will start at halfback and first-five respectively.
The second sister duo in the starting lineup - Fia Laikong and Winnie Palamo – will aim to make a significant impact on the wings, with Grace Brooker and Amy du Plessis forming the centre partnership.
Kaea Nepia will take on the fullback role, rounding out the backline.
The team face Hurricanes Poua at 12.35pm in a Sunday afternoon double header at home.
Matatū will be playing in their purple strip this week to honour International Women’s Day on Saturday.
“This week is another exciting opportunity for those who get to wear the Matatū jersey. Our purple jersey this week acknowledges all the exceptional women who wear it and the amazing women who have helped us to be where we are today,” Hansen says.
