Team Named for Top of the Table Clash v nib Blues

Matatū is heading north to sunny Nelson this week for a top of the table clash against NIB Blues Women at Trafalgar Park on Saturday March 15 at 2.05pm.

Captain Alana Bremner says they’re looking forward to playing in front of their fans in the top of the south.

“We represent all of Te Waipounamu so it’s really special to get up there and play in Nelson for the first time,” Bremner says.

There are two changes to the starting line-up this week – both on the wings.

Charlotte Va'afusuaga has got the nod to start on the left wing while Hollyrae Mete will support from the right wing.

“It’s awesome to have Hollyrae back from injury – she's an exciting athlete both in the middle and on the edge so we’re looking forward to what she will bring to the game on Saturday,” says Head Coach Whitney Hansen.

The class combo of Maia Joseph and Hannah King at 9 and 10 will add to the backs – with Grace Brooker and Amy du Plessis paired at centre.

Following a standout performance last week against Hurricanes Poua including two tries – Kaea Nepia will return to the fullback position.

“We’ve been watching Kaea’s journey for a long time, she’s a phenomenal talent and we’re really enjoying having her in our space,” Hansen says.

In the forwards, the front-row trio of Marcelle Parks, Georgia Ponsonby and Amy Rule will lead from the front.

Laura Bayfield and Chelsea Bremner will again be paired at lock, while Captain Alana Bremner will start at blindside, with Lucy Jenkins at openside.

Kaipo Olsen-Baker will retain the number 8 jersey.

Whitney Hansen says the team is excited to travel to Nelson for the game this week.

"Not only because it’s a beautiful place to play rugby, but it’s a special opportunity for us to connect with our whakapapa as well.”
