Matatū Announces 2025 Squad: A Powerful Mix of Young Talent and Seasoned Leaders Representing the South Island 

Matatū is thrilled to confirm its 30-strong its squad for the 2025 Super Rugby Aupiki season, bringing together emerging rugby stars and a strong core of experienced players. 

 

The team also features two new Assistant coaches Simon Kneenone and Jason Kjestrup, and the return of Head Coach Whitney Hansen, whose leadership has been integral to the team’s growth and South Island representation. 

 

This year’s squad includes dynamic new talent, with several players making their Matatū debut, and a wealth of including Black Ferns who bring considerable international experience. Matatū is set to deliver another thrilling season for our fans, showcasing the resilience and skill that defines South Island rugby.  

 

“Our team this season is an exciting combination of both experience and potential,” said Head Coach Whitney Hansen.  

 

“Once again we have a large number of returning players, who have a strong connection to Matatū and to each other, and will make up some of the critical combinations across the playing group. 

 

“With the new group of contracted athletes we looked to target both young talent from the South Island, who we hope to grow across the next 3-5 years and who will, in time become the next generation of Matatū stars, and talent who we believe possess a real point of difference that we could support to enhance and unleash in our environment.” 

 

Matatū is dedicated to carrying the pride of the South Island across each match. Fans can expect Matatū to bring its trademark passion and formidable defence to every game, uniting players and supporters across the motu.
